Clawhammer strumming is typically associated with the banjo, but it's a great option for the ukulele as well. In this video tutorial, I break down the clawhammer strum into really manageable steps and share an easy play-along for Li'l Liza Jane, my favorite song for practicing new techniques.
The clawhammer strum is a combination of three parts that I refer to as the Pluck, the Strum, and the Thumb. First, get your hands into position by using your fretting hand to make the chord shape of your choice and resting the thumb of your strumming hand on the G string. For the Pluck, use your index finger to strike only the C string. For the Strum, use your index finger—or a combination of your fingers—to strum the C, E, and A strings. For the Thumb, use your thumb to play the G string. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Once you are able to put all of the pieces together and play the clawhammer strum at a reasonable tempo, try playing and singing along to Li’l Liza Jane in the Key of F. This style of strumming is really well-suited for many of the folks songs I share. When you’re ready to try playing it with a new song, check out my other American folk song tutorials. Happy strumming!
