Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and what better way to celebrate than to make music? I’ve rounded up five duets to strum and sing with your sweetheart, and— here’s the good news for beginning ukulele players— two of them can be played with just C, F, and G7!
#1. “Something Stupid” by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman
“Something Stupid” (original recording by Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra), is perfect for a couple in the heady days of new love and would sound beautiful with some fingerpicking. This version was recorded in the key of G using G, G7, Am, D7, Eb. Play along with the chords and lyrics here.
#2. “Picture” by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow
“Picture” by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow captures a dysfunctional, on-again-off-again relationship would sound great on a banjolele or an uke with a low G. The song was recorded in the key of G using G, C, D, and Em. Play along with the chords and lyrics here.
#3. “Lava”
“Lava” from the Pixar short film of the same name, is a sweet song that’s very popular among beginning ukulele players because it only uses the C, F, and G7 chords! Play along with the chords and lyrics here.
#4.” I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher
“I Got You Babe” from Sonny and Cher, is a classic duet that’s trickier than it sounds! It starts in the key of F and transitions to the key of F# near the end. This link to the chords and lyrics will show you the song set in the key of G, making it a bit more beginner-friendly.
Saving the best for last…
#5. “Jackson” by Johnny Cash and June Carter
“Jackson” is a sassy back-and-forth between a husband and wife about what to do now that the fire’s gone out. And it’s only three chords! Play along using C, F, and G7— find the chords and lyrics here.
Bonus:
“I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could” by Ricky Skaggs
“I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could” by Ricky Skaggs, who’s been married to Sharon White for almost forty years. I wasn’t able to embed the version of him singing with his bride and Trisha Yearwood, but I urge you to watch them sing a beautiful harmony here. The recorded version I’m familiar with was recorded in the key of F with the F, Bb, and C chords. Play along with the chords and lyrics here.
